Magic Hour

We’ve all seen a lot of sunsets over the years and, unfortunately, back in the day, we rarely had a camera to capture them. Now, with a cell phone always with us, we have a much better chance of grabbing that perfect sunset.

Here are a few of our favorite sunsets. They are not perfect or award-winning by any means, but they are unedited.

National Trust

The Montserrat National Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and conserving Montserrat’s rich environmental, cultural, and historical heritage. It was established in 1970 and is responsible for managing various sites of interest across the island, including botanical gardens, historical sites and environmental conservation.

Uncle’s Place

If you are in Montserrat, you cannot pass an opportunity to stop at Uncle’s Place, up the hill from downtown Salem. Uncle’s Place is one of the go-to stops for excellent conversation and homemade bush rum.

Take the stairs up to the top of the building for a great West Coast view and an incredible sunset. You can also order a day ahead if you would like to have dinner there.

Enjoy some live music on select nights or sit down at the table to left-right-center with Uncle and Auntie.

Watermelon Cottage

Watermelon Cottage is tucked away in the tree-covered hills of Salem, right at the crossing of the Nantes River. This intimate dining experience is for a max of 12 persons, so make sure to call for a reservation. The owner/host Trevor was previously a cruise director and a fascinating personality backs it up.

Spend the pre-dinner time browsing the owner’s collection of unique items gathered during his travels around the world.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a beer guy at heart. Occasionally I will venture into other drinks but if there is cold beer available, I’m in. A martini is the last drink I will usually ever order, but it just seemed like the right thing to do in these elegant surroundings.

The Attic

The Attic is a fantastic local restaurant that is open for breakfast and lunch during the week until 4. Known for its lunchtime roti and quesadillas, it is also an excellent stop to grab breakfast. Sitting on the front porch, you will see a constant flow of take-away orders, so be sure to place yours in advance if you are in a time crunch.

The Attic itself has been around for decades, formerly of Plymouth, where it was literally in an attic, and run by the current owners Carolynne’s mother. Our first meal on Montserrat in 2015 was at The Attic. While each location on the island has their own take on the national dish of goat water, it was my first meal and what I think of when I visit The Attic.

Summer Breeze World Cuisine & Wine Lounge

Summer Breeze Restaurant offers not only excellent food but a great view of Little Bay and the pier. Serving Caribbean food with an Indian fusion you will surely make multiple stops here. Anyone that knows me knows that if there are Buffalo wings on the menu, I am all in! Needless to say, I think their supply of chicken wings is seriously affected during our visits. But Summer Breeze is much more than chicken wings. From the roti to the curry, you cannot go wrong.

Hilltop Coffee House

Perched on a hill overlooking Cudjoehead and the neighboring islands of Redonda and Nevis, the coffee house is the spot for Sunday morning waffles and coffee while browsing the Air Studios collection. Listen to some historical stories from the founder David Lea and author wife Clover.

This clock face is one of the four from the war memorial that sat in the center of the capital of Plymouth. The biggest meetings were held there and well known visitors spoke in its shadow. Queen Elizabeth addressed the population in 1963 and Marcus Garvey in 1972. It was buried by the volcano in 1997.
