Runaway Ghaut

The Runaway Ghaut is a geological feature on the island of Montserrat. It’s a deep ravine or valley that channels rainwater from the mountains to the sea. It’s particularly famous for its legend: it’s said that anyone who drinks water from the Runaway Ghaut is destined to return to Montserrat.

A few meters East of the ghaut is the entrance to the Runaway Ghaut Hiking Trail.

Lore has it that Runaway Ghaut received its name when in 1712 French forces were run-out of the Olveston area for the second time, following a brief battle with the British.  The legend stating those that drink will return describes when years later, French forces brief returned to the area.
