Garden Revision

This spring, we decided to change things up a bit and start a new look for the garden.

While we loved look of the raised garden beds on the pea gravel, it was a lot of maintenance. The weed barrier under the pea gravel was deteriorated enough that weeding around the beds was more of a chore than weeding the garden. Plus, we wanted to look outside and see more of the garden. The area we initially put the garden was behind a garage and what they say is true; out of sight, out of mind. So, we decided to start fresh.

This time around, we were going to place the garden along the edges of our main yard where it would be visible all the time. We also had an older pergola that used to be over a hot tub, that would be perfect for grapes to climb.

We shopped around for garden beds that would be fun, with a pop of color for the otherwise boring yard. We browsed all of the typical websites for reviews and ideas and opted for long-life span of the Planter Box Direct’s raised metal beds.

Each large bed was $145.00 and the small square beds were $68.00 each. Compared to other well-known companies charging double that with limited color options, we thought these were a great choice.

Shipping was quick and the assembly was simple. There were some dents in the 6′ lengths from shipping, but we just placed them along the backside of the beds, along the fence to hide them. If we had chosen to build the beds in an area you could walk around, we would have had to send them back.

In about 45 minutes we had put together three 2′ x 6′ x 18″ planter boxes and two 2′ x 2′ x’ 18′ square boxes using the color-matched screws provided. We were surprised and impressed that each of the machined screw holes lined up perfectly with the other pieces. There was no fighting to get them to line up as one would expect.

Once assembled, we transferred the rich soil from the old garden beds, topped them with straw, and we were ready to go.

We do have plans to expand in the future, but now it is nice to have the garden in our view every day.
