From the moment you approach the gate and the tiled driveway, you know you are entering a very special home. From the quality of the landscaping to the beautiful stone and tile work, you know what you are about to enter is a well-maintained property.
As you follow the curved driveway up the property, you enter a large parking pad and double carport. The stairs immediately in front of you lead down to the gardens and wrap around to the lower terrace, which has stunning views of the West. A stone staircase carved into the hillside leads you to a small lookout position where you can see over the roof of the home to the sea.
Entering through the home’s main entrance you are instantly struck by the views through the retractable glass wall and the sea beyond. Passing through the glass and screen doors, you find yourself on the perfect covered patio, and the spot you will most likely spend all of your time. You really can’t call it a patio as it feels more like a continuation of the family room with comfortable seating, director chairs, and connected access to the outdoor dining table. There are also separate wine and beer/soda coolers to cut back on the trips back into the house.
On the main covered porch, there is seating for eight and access to the pool. Your views stretch greater than 180 degrees from the Caribbean Sea to the West to past the Montserrat Volcano Observatory to the Northeast. Looking straight out there are 24-hour views of the Belham Valley, Old Towne, Redonda Island, and Nevis.
Back inside, there are three large bedrooms, all with ensuites; two are upstairs and one is accessed via an interior staircase. The kitchen is well-appointed and has all the tools you need to prepare your meals. There is a sliding door from the kitchen to the outdoor dining area for easy meal prep and service. If you are anything like us, most of your meals will be cooked outside on the Weber grill, which is located on the lower terrace. Sunset views over the Caribbean Sea while grilling is really something I could get used to.
The house itself is exceptionally clean and well taken care of. Both the interior and patio area have abundant louvered windows to allow the perfect mountain breeze to enter while keeping you dry during the occasional rain. The housekeeper cleaned twice during our 14-day stay but could be arranged for more if you needed. The pool was checked and cleaned twice a week.
The communication with the owners was prompt and thorough, even though we had no issues that required attention. They provided us with detailed comments about housekeeping, pool service, restaurants, grocery stores, and their hours of operation. The home is conveniently located near many of our favorite spots on this side of the island, including Isle Bay Beach Bar, Andrea’s Takeaway, and the Vue Pointe Restaurant, among others. If you’re up for a hike, Girabaldi Hill is just a short distance away, offering stunning views of the Soufrière Hills volcano.
Upon our arrival to Montserrat on Saturday, we stopped at Umpire’s and Ashok’s for food and liquor since many places would be closed the following day. Upon arrival to Trelawney we realized that we had forgotten to buy coffee and tea for the next morning. To our surprise, there was a note left in the kitchen along with coffee beans, tea, and fresh fruit from the owners garden. The timing was perfect and we were extremely grateful not to have to make the winding drive back to Brades.
There honestly is nothing bad to say about Trelawney. While at the house, we spent every hour we were not sleeping (and a few hours we were sleeping) on the covered patio. We enjoyed every moment we spent at the home and we had zero issues.
If you are looking for a vacation home to buy, it is for sale. Who knows, you may get to watch the operations of the ultra-rich from the comfort of your porch too 🙂
