Sint Maarten
Sint Maarten is a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, occupying the southern 44% of the island of Saint Martin / Sint Maarten. Established as an autonomous nation on October 10, 2010 following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, it shares the world’s smallest landmass divided between two sovereign nations with the French overseas collectivity of Saint-Martin to the north.
Philipsburg Boardwalk (18.02350 , -63.04665)
The capital, Philipsburg, serves as a hub for commerce and tourism, characterized by its iconic pastel-colored colonial architecture and the historic Great Salt Pond. Renowned as the “Culinary Capital of the Caribbean,” Sint Maarten offers a cosmopolitan blend of over 100 nationalities, reflected in its diverse gastronomy, duty-free shopping, and lively nightlife centered around Simpson Bay. Its geography is a mix of rugged, hilly terrain—peaking at Mount Flagstaff and low-lying coastal lagoons. Despite its Dutch political ties, the island is a melting pot where English is the primary spoken language alongside official Dutch, and the U.S. dollar is widely accepted.
Simpson Bay (18.035252 , -63.087730)
If you are staying along the Philipsburg boardwalk, keep in mind that is where up to 5 cruise ships dock in a single day. At anyone time there could be up to 20,000 additional people enjoying the beaches and bars. But come 5:00 PM, the boardwalk area is back to its normal tourist numbers. Be sure to give yourself extra time when travelling to and from Simpson Bay as traffic can get very bad.
