Saba

Saba National Flag

Often referred to as the “Unspoiled Queen” of the Caribbean, Saba is a tiny, majestic island that stands out—quite literally—from its neighbors. Unlike the flat, sandy expanses typical of the region, Saba is essentially the peak of a dormant volcano, Mount Scenery, jutting out of the ocean. At 887 meters, it marks the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This unique geography means you won’t find sprawling white beaches here; instead, the island is defined by dramatic cliffs, lush cloud forests, and a rugged coastline that drops sharply into turquoise waters.

Life on the island is centered around four main villages: The Bottom, Windwardside, Hell’s Gate, and St. Johns. The architecture is famously uniform and charming, featuring white cottages with red roofs and green shutters, nestled into the mountainside. Connecting these settlements is a feat of engineering known simply as “The Road.” For decades, engineers claimed a road couldn’t be built on such steep terrain, but a local man took a correspondence course in engineering and proved them wrong, leading the community to hand-build the winding, scenic path that serves the island today.

Beyond its quaint villages, Saba is a premier destination for those who prefer hiking boots or scuba fins over lounge chairs. The Saba Marine Park is world-renowned for its “pinnacles”—underwater mountains that rise from the ocean floor, swarming with diverse sea life and vibrant coral. On land, the island’s commitment to conservation is evident in its meticulously maintained trails that lead through rainforests to the mist-covered summit of Mount Scenery. It is a place where nature takes center stage, offering a quiet, authentic escape from the more commercialized corners of the Caribbean.
