Located in the heart of Philipsburg on Front Street, the Sint Maarten National Heritage Museum serves as a repository for the island’s rich history. Housed in a traditional 19th-century West Indian building, the museum offers a chronological journey from the island’s earliest inhabitants, the Arawaks and Caribs, through the era of European colonization and the salt industry. Its permanent collection features a diverse array of artifacts, including pre-Columbian pottery, historical maps, and relics from the plantation era, providing a grounded look at how the island evolved into the “Friendly Island” known today.
Beyond its historical displays, the museum places a significant emphasis on the cultural resilience and daily life of the St. Maarten people. Exhibits often highlight the impact of natural disasters, and the subsequent rebuilding efforts that define the local spirit. Visitors can explore traditional Caribbean crafts, geology exhibits detailing the island’s volcanic origins, and rotating photography displays. It functions not just as a tourist stop, but as a community hub dedicated to preserving the Dutch Cul-de-Sac heritage and ensuring that the island’s unique identity is documented for future generations.

Several items on display in the museum have been recovered from the site of the HMS Proselyte, which sank within view of Philipsburg. Originally a Dutch Frigate, the ship was transferred to the British Navy in 1796. 5 years later the ship struck a coral reef and sunk just outside the Great Bay harbor. The HMS Proselyte is now a popular dive site.
The museum is located on a pedestrian street that runs between Front St and the start of the boardwalk and is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
