There are 11 unique beaches on Montserrat, all of which, with the exception of one, comprise of black sand.

If you have never encountered a black sand beach, it is remarkable.  While white sand is caused by the constant churning of coral and shells in the sea, a black sand beach is caused by volcanic activity.  Black sand consists of iron and magnesium (basalt) and volcanic glass.  Due to the nature of its contents, a black sand beach retains much more heat than a white sand beach and can be hot under foot.

At most of the beaches on Montserrat, you will be the only visitors – unless you find yourself in turtle season.  During prime turtle nesting and hatching (May to December), be sure not to drive, camp or have bonfires or other bright lights on or near the nesting sites.
